Join Us in Supporting Healthy School Meals for All
Thousands of Coloradan students returning to school will go hungry because the universal free school lunch program funded by the federal government came to an end. Children need food to survive, thrive and learn in school. Period.
“More than 60,000 kids in Colorado can’t afford school meals but don’t qualify for free or reduced-price lunches,” said Ashley Wheeland, Policy Director for coalition member Hunger Free Colorado. “Two out of every five Colorado families struggle to put food on the table for their children.”
This November, Coloradans can vote in favor of the Healthy School Meals For All ballot measure to ensure that all students in public schools have access to free, nutritious meals.
This vote is not just for food justice, but for racial and economic justice, as well since students and families of color are disproportionately at risk of not having access to fresh, nutritious food. From paying school cafeteria workers more fairly to encouraging that school districts purchase food locally from our Coloradan farmers and ranchers, this bill will touch the lives of so many of our other community members – and our state as a whole. Should the measure pass, Colorado would be the sixth state to provide legislation giving free meals for all and the first in the Mountain West, setting an example for many.
