Our Stories
Danette
With a newborn, a lost job and her partner hospitalized for over a month, Danette turned to one of our network partners for food. Soon she started attending their business classes three times a week and soon launched her own business, Sticky Drip Waffles. Danette not only found a place to pick up nutritious food when she needed the help but also developed the knowledge she needed to springboard into entrepreneurship. She is now a dedicated food access volunteer.
Sara
After suffering a stroke, Sara relied on the food security network for a range of support during her recovery – including food, tax preparation education and coaching on starting her small business, an adaptive yoga center. COVID-19 derailed her business and she again found healthy food in line with her celiac disease limitations, support in her community gardening efforts and help in launching a new career as an end-of-life doula and notary.
Alejandro
Alejandro grew up watching his immigrant mother work long, hard hours to support him and his siblings. In 2019, he quit his 9-to-5 job to start his own delivery taqueria business, Combi Tacos. After working long but rewarding hours, COVID-19 struck and Alejandro’s rented commercial kitchen closed down, which was professionally and personally devastated. After being introduced to the food security network, he was able to find a new kitchen and realized that the network ensures survival, community and entrepreneurship for people in Denver.
